Consultation

Rather than stand in the hallway, Collin was brought across the hall and into the observation room. He sat in one of the old worn desk chairs with Agent Sanders’ assistance. He could feel the heat of the machines and hear the whirs of their mechanisms.

“What exactly happened?” Dr. Clef asked. “You said he tackled you?”

“Not quite,” Collin replied. “I mean, yes, but I think he was tryin’ ta get some comfort, y’know? It was like a big awkward snuggle.”

“A snuggle.” The doctor repeated.

“He makes me hurt deep down in my soul, Doc. He’s like a big kid and doesn’t know how ta be nothin’ else. Special needs type’a kid. Doc, I know I ain’t in the best’a shape, but ya said he don’t like no one else. No one can get close ta him. But he needs someone close ta him. I know I ain’t talked ta him more than twice, but I already just love him ta pieces. He needs someone ta watch out fer him.”

Dr. Clef reclined a bit and folded his hands in his lap. “Are you suggesting you be this person?” He asked.

“Well, I ain’t no professional, Doc. I’za blind man, and an ugly one at that. Seems Skippy is also a ugly blind guy. I couldn’t take care’a myself cuz I was too stupid and lost. But, ya guys found me and cleaned me up. It’s only been a few weeks, but I feel I’ve made some strides. Doesn’t feel like anyone be givin’ that to Skippy.”

There was a moment of silence as Dr. Clef considered this situation very carefully. “That’s not really my call. However, it’s obvious that you’ve proven yourself more valuable than your class. At least, this is my opinion. It would be a shame to let someone like you slip through our fingers when you’ve created this rapport in just two encounters. However, that isn’t my call either. There’s a process for such things, and I’m not the final say. Not by myself, anyway.”

“Whatever,” Collin shrugged. “Yunz is already takin’ care’a me. I got most of what I need. Just don’t think Skippy is bein’ treated fairly. Maybe yunz don’t know how.”

“That’s a possibility,” Dr. Clef replied. “SCP-096—or Skippy, as you call him—he’s—a special case. So far, it seems he’s taken a liking to you.”

“I like him too. He’s kinda sweet, I reckon. Just takes a gentle hand, maybe? I’d like to be able ta visit him regularly if I may. He needs a buddy.”

Dr. Clef swiveled around to look at the other two doctors in the room. “Well, he’s a D-Class.”

“Is that how you want to consider this?” Dr. Parson asked.

“That’s how it is,” he replied. “And that’s how Skruggs will see it. I’ll take these notes with me, and I’d like for you two to continue to keep detailed notes any time there is an encounter between them. We don’t have a lot of time, so the better we can make this case, the better things could be for all of us.
